Interprofessional Education (IPE) is an avenue for improving health outcomes and the quality of health and health care. IPE precedes and promotes Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (IPCP). Interprofessional Collaborative Practice occurs "when multiple health workers from different professional backgrounds work together with patients, families, [careers], and communities to deliver the highest quality of care." (WHO 2010)

In accordance with the quality of health and health care, the issue of patient safety is ever present. It is estimated that up to 440,000 patients die each year in hospitals. And while the numbers are not easily measured in ambulatory (outpatient) care, it is estimated that patient harm in ambulatory settings is much larger than inpatient settings.

Our workshop will focus on patient safety issues within and among ambulatory settings and ambulatory teams.

To prepare for the workshop, the following is required before attending:

1. Complete the IHI Open School online module - PS 101 - Introduction to Patient Safety

2. Upload the IHI Open School Certificate of Completion to this course.

3. Read the article on patient safety in ambulatory care, "Refocusing the Lens"

4. Complete the quiz, which reviews content from "Refocusing the Lens"

5. Use the IPE Workshop Schedule to find out in which classroom (+date/time) you are assigned.
